Question: One should learn from the Guru’s actions and teachings because that’s how the Guru teaches. At the same time we are told not to judge the Guru’s actions. How should one balance this?
Babaji:
You have to be careful. First you have to absorb what the Guru teaches and follow such methods. Blindly you should not adopt any actions of the Guru because Guru knows the secret of karma. What ever action He is doing His mind would not be absorbing any imprints.
There is a famous story that Ramakrishna Paramahansa has told in this regard which created an impact in our childhood also. In the olden days Gurus used to go for trekking. So the Guru was going and the disciples were following him. To test his disciples, for a very long time, six or seven days he did not stop. Earlier, every day in the evenings they used to stop on the outskirts of the village and the disciples used to go and bring alms, food, and offer it to the Guru and then they used to take it after their bathing etc. So the Guru was going for 6-7 days without stopping, everybody was hungry. The disciples would not dare stop or ask the Guru, convey to the Guru that they were hungry. They were simply following. After 6-7 days they came across a pond which was drying and all the fish were about to die. They were all having difficulty breathing. So the Guru took a lot of fish into his mouth and marched further. Disciples simply thought “Oh! This is what the Guru is giving as a signal. He knows that we are all hungry. He wants us to eat these fish, any way they are going to die. So let us eat.” They all put it into their mouth, ate it and finished. So a few days later they were walking again and afterwards in the outskirts of another village a pond full of water came. The Guru, from His mouth, took out all the fish alive and dropped them into the pond and looked at the disciples “Come on, now you also bring out the fish” They couldn’t bring it out; they all had eaten it up and digested it. So they could not do so, they were watching each other’s faces. Then the Guru ridiculed them “Don’t blindly follow the Guru’s actions like that. A Guru knows what He is doing. It may be for a specific purpose. It may have its own secret that the Guru might be appearing, behaving in a different way other than spiritually also sometimes, but you should not blindly follow at once.”
So with the Guru it is important apart from watching the Guru it is more important that you follow His teachings. When He asks you to adopt a systematic method and achieve that one. Following that method is the most important thing.
