Question: When watching the mind in meditation, it seems that the mind comes to stillness. If the mind becomes still, how do impressions then continue to be erased, if they aren't arising. It seems that once we've become lost in thinking again, it's due to becoming somewhat unconscious and ceasing to watch. In that way one is caught up again and the brain isn't getting purified. Would impressions then be absorbed back into the mind? This point gets a little discouraging because sometimes I realize I've been off on a series of thoughts, without realizing it, for far more time than I've been watching.
Babaji:
This is a wonderful question. When it appears to you that the mind has become still, it would be for a while only. Thinking arises because mind has not yet got rid of its acquired habits. Once it starts thinking, unknown, it is acquiring further impressions. Because, when the mind is rid of all the impressions and is totally purified, the thoughts would not arise, and a permanent stillness occurs which is samadhi, Supreme Peace and awareness of Existence. It is because of becoming unconscious (ceasing to watch), and getting absorbed into thoughts that the mind’s attention is again on the illusion of it's own imaginations. That's where the tricky thing is. When thoughts come, try and ignore, try and ignore... It would not be possible to make out which is the thought and which is analyzing that thought. Both would appear as a thought only. When thoughts come, do not get discouraged or irritated. It should be like a sport’s game, playing for the championship, a duel for the valiant soldier. You should enjoy fighting it out. Try and ignore thoughts, that's the best weapon that you have. Then the opponent thought will get beaten up.
