Please explain what the soul is?

What is it that gets reborn?
With birth after birth, does our progress go with us?
Is there some higher significance to the timing of our death or is it completely random as it seems?
What determines when we re-incarnate, and come back into this world and suffer?
If the mind cannot exist without a body and has to reincarnate straight away and if the next reincarnation is dictated by the acquired habits of his mind, how can we make any progress in the next life?
