Memories and emotions are really not good for meditation because in meditation you are trying to quieten the mind. Unless the mind is able to forget the past there would not be any peace. You see the mind is either brooding about the past or is anxious about the future; it is seldom into the present. So you're practicing meditation to purify the mind. So all memories must come to an end. That's only when the mind can go towards the Divine, the Real Self, and experience the Ultimate Truth.
